Praxis Calls on Irish Arts Orgs to Become Apartheid Free Zones
On Thursday, May 14th, 2026, Praxis and other trade unions on the island of Ireland will answer the call of Palestinian trade unionists by taking action in our workplaces.
Click the link in bio to send a mail to some of our major arts institutions asking them to commit the Palestinian and academic Cultural Boycott of Israel. Feel free to edit the template to make it more suitable for arts orgs you have worked with personally or that are in your own locality.
Following Praxis commitment in 2024 to become an Apartheid Free Zone, we have campaigned to pressure the range places that artists and arts workers work – studios, galleries, theatres, publishers etc – to become an Apartheid Free Zone, to support the principles of BDS (Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions) and PACBI (Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel).
25 arts organisations have committed to become an AFZ. While this is a great start we don’t believe it is enough. Many Irish artists have been vocal in their commitment to the principles of PACBI and Palestinian solidarity. This is evidenced by the 2,473 artists who have signed the Irish Artists’ Pledge to Boycott Israel and by the activism of high profile artists such as Sally Rooney and Liam Cunnigham, not to mention the artists who have been dragged through the courts for direct action at Shannon Airport .
Unfortunately many of our arts institutions and organisations have shown little or no leadership and commitment when it comes to Palestine. The ongoing and flagrant abuse of human rights by the Israeli state is a litmus test for what is considered to be acceptable by arts, culture and civil society organisations across the world. Boycotting Israeli academic and cultural institutions is a very simple and effective action Irish Arts organisations should take in advocating for the struggle for Palestinian freedom, justice and equality.
This 14th of May we are calling on Praxis members, artists and arts workers to contact their places of work; studio providers, music venues, galleries, museums to ask them that they make a PACBI pledge and become an Apartheid Free Zone.
